Cardstock Weights and Finishes Explained: Choosing the Right Paper

Paper seems simple until you're staring at "80lb," "110lb," and "300gsm" and wondering what any of it means. The right cardstock makes an invitation feel expensive; the wrong one makes it feel like a flyer. Here's the cheat sheet we use.

lb vs. gsm — what the numbers mean

You'll see two systems. gsm (grams per square meter) is the clearest because it measures weight directly — higher gsm means thicker, sturdier paper. The U.S. lb system is more confusing because it depends on the paper type, so always check it's "Cover" weight (cardstock), not "Text" weight.

Common weights and what they're for

  • 65 lb / ~176 gsm — Light cardstock. Good for layered die-cuts, craft projects, and kids' activities.
  • 80 lb / ~216 gsm — Everyday cardstock for cards, tags, and scrapbooking.
  • 100 lb / ~270 gsm — A great all-purpose invitation weight: substantial but still easy to run through most printers.
  • 110–130 lb / ~300–350 gsm — Premium, luxe feel for wedding invitations and high-end cards. May need a professional printer.

Finishes change everything

  • Matte / smooth — Clean and modern; prints crisp text and color.
  • Linen — Subtle woven texture; classic and elegant for formal invitations.
  • Felt — Soft, refined texture with a high-end feel.
  • Pearl / shimmer / metallic — Catches light for a celebratory, glam look.
  • Glossy — Vibrant for photos, less ideal for handwriting or formal text.

A few pro tips

  • Heavier isn't always better — match the weight to your printer and your project.
  • For double-sided printing, choose a true cover weight so ink doesn't ghost through.
  • Texture is beautiful but can soften fine type; test print first.
  • Always order a little extra for test prints and mistakes.

Frequently asked questions

What weight cardstock is best for wedding invitations?

110 lb cover (around 300 gsm) is a popular premium choice — substantial and luxe. 100 lb cover is a great all-purpose option that's still printer-friendly.

Is gsm or lb more accurate?

gsm is the clearer measure because it states weight directly. With lb, always confirm it's "Cover" weight (cardstock), not "Text" weight.

Can my home printer handle thick cardstock?

Many home printers handle up to about 100 lb cover, but check your printer's specs. Heavier or textured stock often prints best professionally.

Which finish is best for formal invitations?

Linen and felt finishes read as classic and elegant, while pearl or shimmer adds celebratory shine. Matte is the safe, modern all-rounder.
